Second, I believe GeoEnvi clearly indicated he was lagging from the head rail, via this comment:

I hit on 4, and as my ball was bouncing off the foot rail, he started the lag.  I grabbed my ball before it hit the head rail (would have been a lag winner) and said 'let's re-lag, together, and on FOUR this time'.

Lastly, if I intentionally wait until my opponent hits the lag before hitting mine, not only am I a douchebag, but I'm breaking a rule (as referenced above).   Maybe if someone asking you to hit the ball on "4" rather than "3" works you into a frenzy, it isn't the other person that should "calm down".
